We’ve kicked off our King Salmon season here at Lava Creek Lodge! Great to be back on the river in search of those chrome submarines leaving the Bering Sea heading up river.
After one of the coldest winters and springs Alaska has seen in many years, the run seemed a bit delayed, but this past week showed signs of things to come.
Right off the bat there were jacks, (small king salmon), and fresh chum salmon in the home river keeping everyone’s interests piqued getting a handful of tugs a day. And by day 3 and 4 of the weeks a few larger kings in the 12-18 pound range were being caught, all fresh and carrying sea lice.
By the end of the week some really nice fish were caught in the 20 pound range, mixed with the jacks and chums.
Our flyout river, just 30 minutes south of the lodge tends to fish well 5 or 6 days earlier than our home river, and that held true this year as well. Everyone got a chance to venture down there and were rewarded with multiple hookups of fish in the 20+ pound range throughout the week.
Things are looking exciting for this coming week, as we haven’t even seen our big push of fish yet. With some long awaited rain in the forecast, the flush of fresh water should trigger more kings to push into the rivers
Lodge life has been fantastic as always with Betty serving up her usual gourmet dishes and desserts.
