Our third week of king salmon fishing here at Lava Creek Lodge brought back some familiar faces and some new ones. Lou, Thor and Steve had been here fishing silvers in years past, and decided to come up and fish for kings for the first time to see what it’s all about. Being their first time with the spey rods and swinging for salmon, they all picked it up quick and by the end of the week were all online shopping for spey outfits for themselves, I’d say they are hooked!
Our home river continued to give multiple shots of proper king salmon to the anglers each day, with a mix jacks and plenty chums to keep the tugs coming and interest peaked. The chums continue to increase in numbers as the days go on with some spots getting so choked with them you cant get a swing through the run without getting bit.
This week brought some Aleutian peninsula weather, which only allowed us to get the our flyout river the first day of the week, and Thomas capitalized over there with a bright chrome giant to cap the day.
The usual flies continued to produce, with chartreuse and blue, and the OG river Rat being the standard go to combos on our home river.
Ben was another first time king angler and picked up the game quickly, having his “best day” on the final day of the week after working the kinks of spey casting out. I’d say he got it dialed.
Phil has returned to camp many years in a row now, and is always a pleasure to see step of the plane and join us once again. He’s fished Alaska for decades, and still hasn’t lost the stoke for big bright kings.
Even Lainey, part of our camp staff, got in on the fun during an evening session, pulling on some feisty chum salmon.
One more week of King season and it looks like our run will hold out for the new batch of anglers coming in and we’re all looking forward to capitalizing on the end of the run before we switch gears to new species.
