Our first silver salmon of the season always seem to show up August 9, and right on schedule they did again this year. The first silver anglers arrived on August 11th, and right off the bat their first day there were silvers in the river to catch. The beginning of the run for any anadromous fish involves some hunting around to find them, but enough fish around for everyone to catch multiple salmon on their first day of fishing…and each day after that the numbers ramped up as more and more pods of fresh silvers entered the river system.
Our 5 minute flyout to a nearby creek seems to get good pushes of silvers a few days before our main river, and the first day flying over there provided double digit catches for you anglers.

By the end of the week there were good pushes of new fish coming into the home river here, and everyone was landing double digit numbers of fish.

Along with the silvers on the lower parts of the river, the upriver action remained fantastic for dolly varden and trout. The sockeye salmon were in full spawn on Lava Creek and the dollies were behind them in numbers. And they were larger on average this year than some years, with dollies measuring 22-24 inches. Dead drifting beads imitating salmon eggs is always the ticket to catching them, but dolly varden will also grab smolt pattern streamers on the strip. A few really nice trout were found lurking behind the dolly varden as well
Fresh from the salt silvers are so aggressive they will chase and bite topwater flies like poppers or wogs, and the topwater action started to heat up by the end of the week as the fish started to get thick and hold in numbers in the pools. Super fun way to fish for them, as they chase and miss the fly, sometimes shark waking it, sometimes exploding on it, and sometimes gently sipping it like a trout on a mayfly.

With the salmon numbers increasing each day, we’re all bracing ourselves for a full on invasion of silver in the weeks to come. It’s a great time of year to be here if you like to pull on fish until your arms feel like jelly, and it’s just the beginning!
